Police and a coroner's report have finally confirmed that George Michael died of natural causes and that he was not murdered. According to the coroner's report, Michael's death was caused by three separate health issues. The statement reads:
There is a confirmed natural cause of death, being Dilated Cardiomyopathy with Myocarditis and Fatty Liver, the investigation is being discontinued and there is no need for an inquest or any further enquiries.
Darren Salter, Senior Coroner, Oxfordshire
People, March 7, 2017
Here are what each of those terms mean:
- Dilated Cardiomyopathy: a heart disease that happens when the left ventricle stretches and fails to effectively pump blood. As the muscle becomes weaker, heart failure can occur.
- Myocarditis: heart inflammation usually caused by a viral infection.
- Fatty Liver: the buildup of fat in the liver, usually caused by alcoholism but not always.
In other words, George Michael had several heart and liver problems that led to heart failure and then death, meaning that he died neither by murder nor drug overdose, as were both previously somewhat suspected.
