James "Logan" Howlett (Wolverine)
The World's First and Greatest Canadian Super-Hero!
Wolverine first appeared in "The Incredible Hulk" #180-181. He was sent by the Canadian government to capture the Hulk. When he discovers Hulk is fighting the Wendigo, and that both of them are nearly invulnerable, he gets Hulk to help him defeat Wendigo. Then he turns on Hulk, but the green brute lands a glancing blow that knocks Wolverine unconscious. When he wakes up the government has cancelled his mission, saying that Wolverine's time to capture the big green menace has run out.
James Howlett - The Origin Story
James Howlett was a frail boy of poor health. He was the second son of wealthy landowners John and Elizabeth Howlett in Alberta, Canada during the late 19th century. He spent most of his early years on the estate grounds with two friends: Rose and a boy named "Dog" who was the son of the groundskeeper, Thomas Logan.
One night Mr. Logan broke into the house and attempted to kidnap James' mother. John Howlett tried to stop the groundskeeper but was shot down in the process. James had just entered the room when this occurred and for the first time his mutation manifested; his claws extended from the backs of his hands and he attacked the intruders with uncharacteristic ferocity, killing Thomas Logan, and scarring Dog's face with three claw marks.
A Young Wolverine (James Howlett) Kills Groundskeeper Logan
James' Tale Continues...
Years later James and Rose are living in a mining community in British Columbia. To help hide themselves they told everyone they were cousins, and James assumed the name "Logan."
It was during this time that Dog, their childhood friend, came hunting them with the intent to kill James. The two men fight out in the street and even though Dog was stronger, James wound up overpowering him with his rage. After knocking Dog unconscious, James released his claws in full view of the onlookers, and to everyone's shock; he attempted to deal a lethal blow to Dog. A horrified Rose leapt in the way and was stabbed, and killed by the claws.
"Logan" then fled into the woods...
"Logan" In The Woods
For many years he lives in self-imposed exile in the woods with a pack of wolves.
The Weapon X Project
Here Wolverine is seen in the Weapon X Program.
Acquiring The Adamantium
While working for the Canadian Defense Ministry Logan is kidnapped by the Weapon X Program. During his captivity he was experimented on, and the scientists bound the indestructible element Adamantium to his skeleton - including his natural bone claws.
Sometime soon after this he breaks himself free using his new razor-sharp, indestructible claws, and escapes the program. He is then conscripted by Department H of the Canadian government, and is sent on his mission to stop the brawl between Hulk and Wendigo, their ultimate goal being for him to capture the Hulk.
