A black man was celebrating his 50th birthday at his luxury apartment complex's poolside and walked over to a stranger who happened to be lounging there to offer him food and drink. That stranger declined, and instead, shot the man extending welcome with a gun he hid under his shirt. The shooter, Peter Selis, a 49-year-old white man, then opened fire on the rest of the partygoers, never even leaving his lounge chair.
Selis shot seven people in total before he was shot and killed by police, at whom he was pointing his gun. One of his victims, a black woman, died of her injuries. Another black man injured his wrist while trying to escape. Selis' other victims included three more African-American women, two more African-American men, and one hispanic man. Police say that it is possible Selis' shooting was a hate crime, but have not yet found clear motive, but whatever it was, one witness described Selis during the shooting as "pretty relaxed."
We looked at the pool area where the shooter was sitting there with a beer in one hand and a gun in the other.
