Top 10 Comic Books Of 2016

Comic books are once again taking their rightful place in the world of mainstream pop culture. And while the films of the big two publishers are raking in all the cash, there are some really amazing stories are being told in the pages of various comic books.

We think Valiant had a banner year with their offerings, but that does not mean that some other publishers didn't sneak in some really special books.

Generation Zero #1

Years ago, the children of the experimental strike team known as Generation Zero were taken from their families by Project Rising Spirit, a private weapons contractor, and raised to be psychic soldiers.

After years of taking orders, they have fought for and won their freedom. Now, the world's most wanted teenagers have pledged to protect each other tooth and claw, while using their extraordinary abilities to right wrongs for a generation without a future? To fight for kids, just like them.

Original, creative, and with an interesting main character Generation Zero is a book you need to be reading.

2

Wrath of the Eternal Warrior #14

Out of the abyss and into oblivion! Gilad Anni-Padda has faced tanks, trenches, and legions many thousands strong. Now, true peace is finally within reach of the man that myth calls the Eternal Warrior?

But, to claim it, he must undertake a mission beyond the grasp of any mortal soldier?and rescue the soul of his long-lost son from the underworld.

Wrath of the Eternal Warrior #14 is both touching and untamed and is hands down in the upper echelon of comic book series.

3

Moon Knight #1

Marc Spector (a.k.a. Moon Knight/Jake Lockley/Steven Grant) has been fighting criminals and keeping New York City safe for years...or has he? When he wakes up in an insane asylum with no powers and a lifetime's worth of medical records, his whole identity (identities) are called into question.

What is real? What is fake? Spector doesn’t even have a clue and neither do we which makes this a really interesting tale. As soon as Marc puts his Moon Knight mask on, it looks as if the world we know is under Seth’s, the god of the desert, storms, and disorders control.

There is clearly some sort of illness here, but what it is and how much of what he is seeing is actually real keeps Moon Knight #1 really engaging.

4

Generation Zero #2

They've infiltrated, assassinated, and overthrown... Now this reformed covert strike team of teenage walking warheads have set their sights on a dangerous new mission: high school!

In the secretive tech oasis of Rook, Michigan, who can a teenager trust? Not the police... Not the teachers... And definitely not the parents.

With this second issue, Generation Zero proves again that it is one of the best stories we may have right now on the market. It’s one that you need to be following. We are only on issue two, but it still surprises me how well constructed this plot is.

5

Britannia #1

Ruled by the Fates. Manipulated by the Gods. Commanded by Caesar. In the year 65 A.D., one's destiny was not his own. At the height of Nero's reign, a veteran of Rome's imperial war machine has been dispatched to the farthest reaches of the colonies to investigate unnatural happenings.

In the remote outpost of Britannia, Antonius Axia – the First Detective – will become Rome's only hope to reassert control over the empire's most barbaric frontier and keep the monsters that bridge the line between myth and mystery at bay.

Very light, interesting and well paced, Britannia #1 has what it needs to catch the readers eye on every page and keep them keep reading. Whether it’s a full scene, a single image, some bit of dialogue or a surprising plot twist, Britannia #1 hits all the right points that a great comic should.

6

Doctor Strange #8

All of Doctor Strange's magic has been destroyed and our world is on the edge of disaster. What on Earth can Stephen do?

I had many expectations going into this issue and it seems like Jason Aaron knew how to work a simple plot in a great way. The script this time around is slow, with not as much action as in past issues and with a distinct lack of drama, but it’s exactly what was needed to keep the focus on all the characters present.

The one thing that we learned from this issue is that the Empirikul are truly a race to be feared and really shake up the Doctor Strange mythos.

Generation Zero #4

It's a hell of a day in the neighborhood. The darkness bubbling beneath the miraculous town of Rook, Michigan is beginning to surface. As Generation Zero closes in on the vicious force abducting and killing teenagers, they quickly discover that this self-proclaimed utopia has been hiding a deep and disturbing secret that could destroy them all!

I’ve been a fan of Generation Zero since it started, and, despite this love, this is not the best issue if you are looking for action, but it give something I haven’t really seen in other comic books: diversity. This is the first time I’ve seen a character with Asperger’s Syndrome depicted in a major comic, and that alone is worth a lot.

Generation Zero is hands down one of the best comic series of the year, if not one of the best things about all of 2016 period

8

Wrath of the Eternal Warrior #13

Unbound and unrelenting! After countless centuries apart, the Earth's Fist and Steel has finally reunited with his long-lost son, Kalam. But before this father and son can truly find peace, they must first face the impossible?and escape from death itself!

As unimaginable terrors rise to prevent Earth's immortal champion and his scion from returning to the land of the living, can the Eternal Warrior conquer eternity to save the boy he once thought lost?or will his transgressions against the natural order trap them forever at the far end of eternity?

Wrath of the Eternal Warrior #13 keeps its own style while achieving a more realistic look, playing with a more emotional aspect. Some real human vulnerability is shown in our hero, but there’s also that murderous rage that we all love, with a deadly mix of feelings reflected in all of the pages. The book is not just a good read, but a great all around experience.

9

Captain America: Road To War (2016) #1

Captain America and Black Widow must train the new Avengers recruits to work together as a team. Their first mission: stop the giant robot, Ultimo!

Seems quiet logical that, as it was first a comic arc, there would be a new comic tie-in with this new film, one that serves as a prequel to the movie, a bridge between it and the past one. And that’s just what we get in Captain America: Road to War, which first issue of a mini-series event leading to the film.

Seems like Marvel has a really good bridge between Age of Ultron and Civil War. It’s a fun book and works well as a movie tie-in book, something that often is an afterthought.

Tarot: Witch of the Black Rose #100

I discovered this lovely comic series in the beginning of the year and it was the best thing that could have happened to me. It represents almost everything that I've been dreamed about witches and magic: action, aesthetic, story, characters and a heaping helping of eroticism.

Tarot: Witch of the Black Rose #100 was a marvel to see, read and enjoy, and if you haven't started this series, please, do it as soon as possible. It's like visual poetry for the eyes. Just be warned that it's for mature readers only!
