Carandiru Penitentiary massacre, Brazil, 1992

More than 100 prisoners were slaughtered in the now demolished Brazilian jail back in 1992. The deaths came as authorities tried to quell an uprising in the severely overcrowded facility. In 2014, 15 police officers were handed sentences of 48 years in prison each for their role in the killings.

Apodaca Prison, Mexico, 2012

In a case of gang warfare, 44 inmates were killed when members of the Zetas drug cartel clashed with its rival Gulf Cartel. Investigators later found that some of the prisoners had been stabbed and stoned to death.

Ciudad Juárez jail, Mexico, 2011

A total of 17 prisoners were killed as armed inmates ran amok in the Chihuahua state penitentiary. CCTV footage revealed that inmates gunned down other prisoners using high-powered firearms which had been smuggled into the jail.

Escuintla detention center, Guatemala, 2015

Violent gun battles between rival criminal factions left 17 inmates dead at a prison in the Guatemalan city of Escuintla in November 2015. At the time, the detention center held 3,000 inmates in a facility built to house 600.

Pelican Bay State Prison, California, 2000

Regarded as one of the bloodiest prison riots in California's history, 33 inmates were stabbed and 15 shot - one fatally -as correctional officers desperately tried to keep control of the jail. A prison guard was later judged to have justifiably shot dead rampaging inmate Miguel Sanchez, who was stabbing a fellow prisoner with a handmade shank.
