Mary Tyler Moore has died at the age of 80, after more than 60 years of endearing and astounding audiences with her acting, with the shows she produced, and with her dedication to finding a cure to juvenile diabetes. Her longtime representative, Mara Buxbaum gave a statement on Ms. Moore's death.
Today beloved icon Mary Tyler Moore passed away at the age of 80 in the company of friends and her loving husband of over 33 years, Dr. S. Robert Levine... Mary will be remembered as a fearless visionary who turned the world on with her smile.

Moore got her start as an actress when she played dancing elf Happy Hotpoint, the star of a series of commercials for Hotpoint Appliances, in the 1950s.

Her next major role was as a pair of attractive secretary legs on Richard Diamond, Private Detective in 1957.

Her big break came, though, when she was cast as Laura Petrie on the Dick Van Dyke Show in 1961.

After the show ran five seasons, winning her two Emmys, Mary Tyler Moore got her own show, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, which although it ended in 1977, sparked two spinoff shows. The Mary Tyler Moore Show is also considered to be the first modern woman's sitcom, featuring Mary as a young, thirty-something single career woman in 1971.
Mary Tyler Moore's intro, featuring her spinning and tossing her hat into the air is one of the most iconic intro sequences of all time.
Mary Tyler Moore went on to star in films such as Robert Redford's 1980 film, Ordinary People, for which she was nominated for an Oscar. She also started her own production company which would produce televisions shows such as The Bob Newhart Show, Hill Street Blues, and St. Elsewhere.
