A statue entitled "Fearless Girl" which depicts a young girl in a ponytail with a determined expression on her face now stands directly opposite the wall street bull statue in honor of International Women's Day and as a reminder to Wall Street that the more gender diverse leadership is, the better it is.
Installed by State Street Global Advisors, a company which invests in more than 3500 other companies around the world, representing about $30 trillion in market capitalization, the statue promotes their new initiative to increase the number of women on their many clients' corporate boards. SSGA President and CEO Ron O'Hanley said of the statue:
Today we are calling on companies to take concrete steps to increase gender diversity on their boards... A key contributor to effective... leadership is diversity of thought, which requires directors with different skills, backgrounds, and expertise.

O'Hanley continued his speech, pointing out that women not only increase performance but decrease crime when they are in leadership roles.
Certain research shows that companies with greater levels of gender diversity have had stronger financial performance as well as fewer governance-related issues such as bribery, corruption, shareholder battles and fraud.
