For those who love an incredible cast as much as they love intrigue and drama

As if Big Little Liesfirst season, starring Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley and Zoe Kravitz, didn’t boast enough star power, none other than Meryl actual Streep is joining the cast for season 2. What more reason do you need to start lapping it up?

Set in the moody California coastal town of Monterey, this dramatic series, based on Liane Moriarty’s novel, tells the story of a group of women with very different backgrounds brought together by a life-changing event. What is that event? Well, we know someone’s dead, but we don’t know who. Despite this deeply mysterious aspect of the show, it’s far more than just a whodunnit type thriller - it’s the type of show that will leave you thinking about it for days after watching the credits roll on the final episode. These women will continue to bond and battle their demons in a second season set to explore strong friendships, fragile marriages, the struggle of parenting and the brewing dark cloud of impossibly heavy lies.

For fans of Gone Girl and small town mysteries

Remember when Gillian Flynn’s captivating novel Gone Girl, and the subsequent movie adaptation gripped the whole world? Well Sharp Objects is a thrilling miniseries born from the mind of that very same author.

Starring the brilliant Amy Adams (who doesn’t love Amy Adams - get that woman an Oscar!) as troubled journalist Camille Preaker, as well as Patricia Clarkson and Chris Messina, Sharp Objects is everything you’d expect from a Flynn story - a psychological thriller packed with brain-melting mystery, dark humour and twists and turns you never saw coming. If you asked us to describe this eight-part series in two words we’d say “irresistibly compelling” - it will have you hooked in minutes, and raving to your friends before you’ve even finished the first episode.

For people who love a murder mystery set somewhere luxurious

The Riviera phenomenon keeps rolling on. Julia Stiles is back on the French coast as Georgina Clios, an American art curator whose idyllic life is thrown into chaos when her billionaire philanthropist husband dies in a mysterious yachting accident. The show combines elements of soap operas with classic murder mysteries and straight up thrillers, while giving an intimate and fascinating overview of the luxurious lives of the global elite.

For season 2 Iwan Rheon and Adrian Lester are back as Adam Clios and Robert Carver, while Will Arnett - of Arrested Development and voice-of-Lego-Batman fame - is a typically brilliant addition to the cast. How will Georgina’s past catch up with her in this much-awaited second season? How will the Clios family deal with their grief while continuing to be entwined in a dark web of secrets? We can’t wait to find out.

And if you always find yourself watching historical dramas...

If you’re a fan of period dramas and haven’t seen Jamestown yet, boy do we have a treat in store for you. It’s your classic British drama with an American twist - rather than being set among the rolling hills of the English countryside, Jamestown follows the first settlers of Virginia way back in 1619. Jocelyn Woodbyrg (Naomi Battrick), Alice Kett (Sophie Rundle) and Verity Bridges (Niamh Walsh) arrive in the States preparing to marry the men who paid for their passage, but far more awaits them in this brave new world across the ocean.

If you’re not big on history don’t worry - Jamestown often feels more like a soap opera than a historical piece. By that we mean it’s packed with action, a load of fun, and doesn’t take itself too seriously. Perfect easy evening watching after a long day.

But if you prefer something a little more fast-paced…

9-1-1 is the all-action crime drama which feels perfectly built for 2019. Angela Bassett stars as LAPD patrol sergeant Athena Carter Grant, with none other than Jennifer Love-Hewitt joining the cast for the rip-roaring second season. The show is episodic, meaning there’s a brand new crisis for our heroes to tackle every episode. This also means it’s a really easy one for you to dip in and out of - when you’re feeling high octane and ready for a white knuckle ride, you know what to put on.

Some episodes will have you gripping the sofa with tension, others will tug at your heartstrings, as we learn about the lives of these officers outside of their uniforms as well as out on the streets. The exhilarating action coupled with the soap-like drama gives 9-1-1 the feel of a ‘guilty pleasure’-type show - except you have absolutely nothing to feel guilty about.
