Plastic is a wonderful, durable material, but when it comes to getting rid of it cleanly, it can be a huge ecological problem. Fortunately, one scientist may have found a solution. Federica Bertocchini, a Spanish researcher and part-time beekeeper, has long been accustomed to wax worms plaguing her hives, so this time, when she tried to get rid of them, she put them in a plastic bag. When she went back to find them the next day, they had eaten through the plastic, and she wondered if they were actually digesting it.
After mashing them up and smearing them on some plastic film, she found that their digestive enzymes did, in fact, eliminate plastic. She quickly went on to confirm it through a team at Cambridge University and published the findings of their study.
But now, what we'd like to know is...
Do you think wax worms could be the solution to the world's plastic problem?
