Then the last ten years happened and you realise that morality is no linear, and that maintaining a planet where sentient beings can live in relative peace requires massive effort for each and every generation.

We know no one is perfect, but we all thought at least one or two people sneakily were. Guess what?! They probably have a history of abuse or some other colossal flaw. Good luck reconciling this information with your naive belief that people are inherently good.
