He never does that to his own children. His own children wear expensive silk and fur clothing and are always treated with grand meals.

As a matter of fact, all he does during his leisure time is spend money recklessly, gamble, and go to brothels. Mrs. Reed is a typical Victorian upper class women. She loves wearing frills and has two servants who work below her. She is also known to be a selfish and hard-hearted, as she thinks of herself more than others. In fact, she treats her niece with cruelty, due to her resentment towards her husband who always loved Jane more than his own children. Seeing from her resentment, we can see that her emotions toward Mr. Reed is genuine. She is definitely a women with passionate hate or love.
