Here's how:

A video that is about 60 minutes long will take up around 750 megabytes up on your computer, so get an external hard drive if you want to keep your computer space.
Make sure your VHS player has an audio and video output.
Plug the adapters colour coded ends into their matching connections.
Install the adapters software and makes sure it's connected properly.
Start the transfer once you've named the file.
Press the record button and press play on the VHS.
You are in real time so you have to wait till the entire tape is through but you can edit any bits out you don't want to keep!
Then you can start editing it and watch it on your computer.
