Situated at the junction of High Street and Arundel Gate this was one of Sheffield's most iconic landmarks until it was filled in and closed in 1994.
At the centre of the underpass was a huge fish tank which contained 2,000 gallons of water and a variety of fish including goldfish, carp and bream.
The Hole in the Road opened in 1967 but was filled in in the 1990s to make way for the Supertram network.

In the days before Ponds Forge the place to go to in the city centre for swimming and diving was Sheaf Valley Baths.

The baths were demolished in 1991.

This council building was disliked by many following its construction in the late 1970s.

The old Peace Gardens

Since the millennium the Peace Gardens has been a hub of city centre life thanks to its dancing fountains and lush patches of grass.
People from all over the city mingle in this fantastic open space.
But this hasn't always been the case.
Those who remember the Peace Gardens prior to its revamp will recall a run-down space where few dared to tread.

The Wedding Cake

Another local 'wonder' of 1970s architecture which is no more is the former Register Office building, known locally as The Wedding Cake.
Over the course of three decades thousands of local couples would have tied the knot at this Sheffield landmark.
The building was knocked down in 2004. Since then couples have been able to get married inside Sheffield Town Hall.

Anyone who grew up in the city in the 1980s will recall being able to ride a bus for just two pence!

Redgates

This huge toy shop used to dominate Furnival Gate.
In its heyday Redgates was considered to be the UK's best toy shop outside of London.
Youngsters would wander open-mouthed among three storeys of Lego, dolls houses, Subbuteo, Meccano, bikes, buggies, goal posts, Spiderman outfits, Matchbox cars, railway sets, wooden horses and board games.
The shop was founded in Fargate way back in 1857 and after more than a century in the city it sadly closed its doors for good in 1988.

Bendy buses

Sheffield has a proud history of experimental transport – and by far the type of bus which will stick out in Sheffielders’ memories is the bendy bus.
First introduced in the 1970s, bendy buses came and went several times through the decades.
They were brought back by Mainline, which initially ran them as a free hop-on, hop-off service in the city centre – allegedly because Government transport rules at the time meant bendy buses were not legal if they were run as charged-for buses.
They also gained a bit of a reputation for providing passengers with a wild ride.
