Black Canyon of the Gunnison
About two million years ago, the Gunnison River had washed away the softer volcanic breccia and hit dense basement rock. Trapped in a groove of its own making, the river has been carving deeper ever since, especially during the last ice age, when glacier meltwater sliced through, leaving sheer cliffs in its wake.
