There were many failures. I was very much enamored with a girl in my school. I must have been 17, and after a lot of pursuing, she gave in to go out with me. This being Scotland, there's not much to do. But we arranged to meet outside a Burger King in the center of town.

The last book I read was by Bear Grylls. He was one of the youngest men ever to climb Everest. He's quite inspiring. He talks a lot about the loneliness and the grind you have to do on the mountain, and those quiet moments are when you're testing yourself and knowing yourself better. I relate to that. I kind of crave loneliness.

In this job, you're constantly surrounded by people. There are a lot of demands on your time. And I guess those moments when you can switch off and get away from it are really important. Being on your own sometimes is appealing.
