Narcissism doesn't refer to the act of enjoying to take a few selfies here and there. Most of us like to do that, and most of us are not narcissists.... Or at least we'd like to believe so! You've likely heard that a narcissist is someone who is so overly full of themselves. Maybe they're obsessed with how they look, how they think, and enjoy boasting about themselves. That's what you've been taught, right?
Well, that's not exactly what it means. So, how IS it defined?
More accurately, narcissism is one of 10 personality disorders and is defined as an inflated sense of self. Additionally, the Mayo Clinic explains it as: "A mental condition in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for excessive attention and admiration, troubled relationships, and a lack of empathy for others. But behind this mask of extreme confidence lies a fragile self-esteem that's vulnerable to the slightest criticism."
There's actually 9 traits to look for prior to putting a label on someone's narcissism. According to Psycom, here they are:
1) Having an inflated sense of self-importance and entitlement.
2) Needing constant admiration.
3) Expecting special treatment, whether it's favors or apologies, simply because you believe you deserve to have it.
4) Exaggerating achievements and talents.
5) Reacting negatively to any sort of criticism.
6) Being preoccupied with fantasies about power, success and beauty.
7) You don't think twice about taking advantage of others if it means helping you achieve your own means.
8) Having an inability or unwillingness to recognize the needs and feelings of others.
9) Behaving in an arrogant manner, and only associating with those who you think are equally as special, successful and talented as you are.
