It was five years after he lost his leg in Afghanistan in 2011 before Marine Jose Sanchez could even bring himself to open a gift from his fellow troops. What he found there, though, inspired him to do something amazing: run in the Boston Marathon.
The gift Sanchez opened was an American flag, covered in well-wishes and stories of hope from his comrades, and it was this flag that he carried with him as he ran the full length of the race in just under six hours.
Instead of putting it away, I wanted to fly this flag again in their honor. It’s for others to be inspired, to be motivated. I don’t do it for myself. We live for others — I’ve learned that throughout being angry and frustrated...
