It’s summertime, it’s the 40th anniversary of Jaws, and it’s the start of Shark Week again. Which got us thinking—sharks have always played a big role in pop culture. Feb, 2015: We meet the great Left Shark

At the Super Bowl XLIX half-time show, Katy Perry is overshadowed by "Left Shark"--one of two costumed dancers who hilariously goes rogue with the choreography.
July, 2013: 'Sharknado!'

A notorious “so bad it's good” movie for the ages, it tells the story of a tornado. Made of sharks. And there’s Tara Reid.
August, 2004: 'Open Water' is released.

The terrifying film about a couple left behind after their scuba trip in shark infested waters (based on a true story) is released. Made for less than $200,000 , it made over $54 million at the box office.
May, 2003: Bruce, the vegetarian shark!

'Finding Nemo' introduces vegetarian shark Bruce ("Fish are friends, not food"), named after the malfunctioning shark from 'Jaws.'
July 1999: 'Deep Blue Sea' is released.

The film about genetically modified sharks who are super smart due to the testing of an Alzheimer's "cure," also has one of the most famous death scenes in film, when Samuel Jackson is snatched by a shark mid-"heroic" speech.
May 1997: 'Austin Powers' introduces sharks with laser beams on their frickin’ heads.

April 1995: 'Swimming With Sharks'

Kevin Spacey and Frank Whaley star in 'Swimming with Sharks,' a dramedy about the ruthlessness of the film business. Spacey plays a highly influential but equally ruthless film mogul, who takes on a new assistant whom he abuses to his breaking point.
July, 1988: Shark Week premieres!

For 23 years, it’s been the most watched week of programming on the Discovery Channel, featuring freaky footage like the above of a Great White attacking a teeny boat. As the guys in the clip say, “Bugger!”
1977: Fonzie jumps the shark!

In 'Happy Days,' the Fonz is seen jumping over a shark on water skis. This gives rise to the phrase "Jumping the Shark," which refers to the moment where a TV show becomes so ridiculous as to lose the interest of its audience.
June, 1975: 'Jaws' comes to theaters

De-nuh. De-nuh. Get out of the water! The film 'Jaws' (you know, the one that put Steven Spielberg on the map) comes to theaters. Trips to the seaside will never be the same again.
July, 1966: Batman fights off a shark with shark repellent spray

Proving that he really is invincible, Batman (Adam West), fights off a shark while dangling from a ladder with some handy Shark Repellant spray. The 1966 Batman movie (also starring Burt Ward as Robin) is notoriously campy, but so much fun.
Oct., 1961: The Sharks in 'West Side Story'

In the film adaptation of 'West Side Story,' the Sharks battle the Jets. The musical was written by Jerome Robbins with music by the then-up-and-coming Stephen Sondheim. Above, watch the Sharks and their leading ladies sing “America.”
