If you have ever been stuck in gridlocked traffic or had to take a very long and tiring road trip, chances are you have found yourself wishing you could just push a button and fly to your destination. Flying cars have been a science fiction mainstay for about a century. Inventors and engineers have been developing flying cars since the early 1900's. Today we are closer than ever to have vehicles that can be called 'Flying Cars".

All of Moller's 'Skycars' are Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL) aircraft powered by Rotary Engines which the developer claims is the key to the future success of the vehicle. The developer also claims that future models will be fully autonomous.

The Ehang 184 is a essentially a person carrying drone. The developer claims the aircraft will be fully autonomous and will be controlled via an app. It is envisioned that the Ehang 184 will be used like flying taxis.

e-Volo's Volocopter VC 200 recently had it's first manned flight. This aircraft developed in Germany also falls under the manned drone category. It is powered by a multitude of electric motors. The pilot flies the aircraft with one hand only and is mostly autonomous. The current version seats 2.

The Transition is a 'roadable aircraft'. You drive it to your nearest airport or airfield, push a button to unfold the wings and take off like an airplane. Terrafugia was started by a group of MIT graduates. They also have a VTOL Flying Car in development called the TF-X, but it is only in concept stage.

The Aeromobil V3.0 is also a 'roadable aircraft'. Developed in Slovakia, this aircraft can be driven to an airport or airfield where the wings can be unfolded to take off.

Dutch company Pal-V is developing the Pal-V One. It is a Gyrocopter -Carver automobile hybrid. It can drive on the road like a Carver car and is turned into a Gyrocopter when you want to fly.

The company is marketing it as the ultimate 'rich boy's toy', but has also been trying to get the military's attention.
