Is Dumont Crystal Diner the oldest diner in NJ?
16,April2019
Citation: Gabriele, Michael C. (2017, January 31). Is Dumont Crystal Diner the oldest diner in NJ? Retrieved from https://www.northjersey.com/story/life/food/2017/01/30/new-jersey-diners-dumont-crustal-diner-diner-food/96985180/
Author: Michael C. Gabriele is a lifelong New Jersey resident and a graduate of Montclair State University. He is the author of The Golden Age of Bicycle Racing in New Jersey and has worked as a journalist for over 35 years. He is a member of the executive board of the Nutley Historical Society and is on the advisory board of the Clifton Arts Center.
Audience: This website is for those who are diner addicts, and love everything diner relating to New Jersey. Since New Jersey is the undisputed diner capital of the world, the title of oldest diner in New Jersey has long been a topic of diner conversations from best food, best coffee, or who has the best
hash. From local college kids, to older retirees, this diner has been a go-to destination in Bergen County for years. This diner has been operating for over 90 years and that puts it nearly at the top for making it the oldest diner in the state.
Summary: This diner has survived the many challenges of restoration
and resurfacing while keeping it’s same footprint. That is a challenge in itself for any diner past, present, or future. The Dumont Crystal Diner’s location is
in a little bit of a strange place, on the border of the Dumont business district,
but the diner is adjacent to the tracks of the “West Shore Line” of the old New York Central Railroad. The train line, which ran from Albany, NY, to its terminus of Weehawken and ferry service to New York City, ceased operations in 1959.
So, back in the day the railroad played an important role in the history of the diner and is why it was hugely successful.
Value: The value of this article will help the reader see the value of the Dumont Crystal Diner, and how it has brought generations of diverse people together to sit down, grab a coffee and have a good time. Lutfi (Louie) Saleh owns the Dumont Crystal and was born in the ancient city of Bethlehem on
the West Bank. This shows that if you have a dream you can accomplish anything and be very successful in it if you work hard towards your goals, dreams, and aspirations.

Final Project Annotated Bibliography/Book American Diner Then and Now
16, April 2019
Citation: Gutman, Richard., & Gutman, Richard. (2000). American diner then and now. Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press. https://jhupbooks.press.jhu.edu/title/american-diner-then-and-now
Author: Richard J. S. Gutman is the author of books such as American Diner
Then and Now. Richard J.S. Gutman, as director and curator of the Culinary Arts Museum at Johnson & Wales University, mounted 96 exhibits in eleven years. He is the leading diner expert, writing four books on the subject. He began his study of diners with a thesis for his architecture degree at Cornell University and, over the
years, worked on more than 85 restoration projects. Richard has been interviewed nationally and internationally appearing on NPR, PRI, BBC, Food Network, History Channel, ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, Smithsonian and The New Yorker, just to name afew.
Audience: Anyone who is interested in learning about the history of the American diner, and how there is a sort of revival going on to restore them should read this book. The author talks about the first diner in 1872 to the "rediscovery" of diners in the 1990’s. This book also covers in detail the history, architecture, menus, and the appeal of this American creation. This book has over 275 photographs in color and black and white, and this book is the landmark work on its subject, a revised and expanded edition of Gutman's classic “American Diner”.
Summary: There are several books about American Diners, but this book American Diner Then and Now that Richard J.S. Gutman published really showcases the value and presence that diners have had in American culture. The book talks about the changes, diners have faced throughout the years and how many have shuttered, but now more than ever many diners are making a comeback. The book that this author has written also talks about how these diners bring
communities together, and how they give back to their local communities.
Value: The value of this book will help show how once it was published in 1979, it inspired people to buy, restore, and reopen diners across the country. The most effective piece of advice that the author in this book gives is that the diners are of great interest and that it’s a survivor, renovated and resurfaced, while keeping the same footprint in their communities. This edition includes a state-by-state directory
or where diners are, and the locations for those that are currently operating.

16, April 2019

in international reporting, and has worked in Auckland, New York City, and Johannesburg.
Audience: This magazine is one of the most well known in the world, so for those who aspire to know the best diners in America, this is the magazine that will guide you to them. This magazine is also forthose who have never had the pleasure of
sitting down on a stool at the countertop for a milkshake. This is what makes a diner, a diner because they are inexpensive, casual, open late, and serve a menu
of all-American classics.
Summary: The main point of this magazine helps you know where the best diners in America are and why you should go visit them. The author of this article in this magazine talks about the design in diners that have followed trends through the years. For example, in the '50s, the space race meant neon rockets and stainless-
steel countertops. In the '60s, Mediterranean and neoclassical styles became
popular as diners fought hardto maintain customers interest while fast food gained popularity. At theend of the day both fast food, and diners have lasted and will continue to be a staple in American culture.
Value: The value of knowing about the best diners in America helps keep the diner culture alive. The way the magazine determined the 25 best diners in the country, Yelp ranked businesses in the diner category, excluding large chains.“Best”,
according to Yelp, is based on an algorithm that looks both at the number of reviews and star ratings. This is important because no more than two diners per state can
make the list in order to ensure geographic diversity, so this is a very reliable source.

The 21 Best Diners in America
16, April 2019
Citation: Food, Thrillist. (2018, April 27). The 21 Best Diners in America. Retrieved from https://www.thrillist.com/eat/nation/the-best-diners-in-america-classic american-diners-24-hour-diners
Author: Thrillist Food is the leading lifestyle brand for awesome people everywhere. Through our coverage of food, drink, travel, and entertainment we inspire millions to get out there and live their lives to the Thrillist.
Audience: This article is for those who aspire to know where the best diners in America are, and how they came about. The article talks about how diners are
places where you're likely to be referred to as "hon" as a cross-section of the city's population buzzes around at all hours, coming together under the shared banned of greasy breakfasts served 24/7, burgers fried on an age-old griddle, and, of course,
the legendary pie.
Summary: Some people call the diner an endangered species. The 21 best diners in America is proof that sometimes the best way to embrace change and endure is
to refuse to change at all. The article talks about diners from East Coast to West Coast, and talks about how their location is key to their success. I love how this article let’s the reader know that diners are here to stay and it seems that they
are becoming more popular as Americans are having a renaissance of sorts and being more nostalgic when it comes to going to diners.
Value: The take away from learning about the top 21 diners in America is that it is very opinionated. Anyone can make a top 21 diners but all of them have something in common, and that is it brings people from different communities and all walks of life together all in the name of food. Diners will always be an American tradition and this article is helping feed that narrative by letting the world know that the American Diner is here to stay.
Final End Note
I have learned a great deal in doing these projects, and I will take the knowledge I learned with me throughout my studies. It was very challenging to adjust to all of the different types of media outlets that we had to use, but I ended up adjusting fairly well. After all technology and social media is only going to become more commonplace in our society. I am very proud of my progress in doing these assignments throughout the semester.
Our class was a little hesitant to attack these projects at first, but staying involved with the blog and encouraging each other helped tremendously. I believe everyone in class has grown in storytelling knowledge and we couldn't have had a better professor to teach this course to us. I look forward to honing my skills learned and helping others learn how to tell a story proficiently, and effectively.
