Times Square Put Up An Immigration-Themed Valentines Day Statue
Do you think this is too political for a holiday about romance?

In honor of Valentines Day, Times Square put up a highly unique statue this year. From a distance, it looks like a multi-tonal red heart on a black background.
And as you approach it, you realize that it's made up of several painted poles.
On even closer review, you see that the polls are covered in writing, and what is written on them makes a firm statement about immigration in America.
The project, entitled "We Were Strangers Once, Too," a reference to Barack Obama's 2014 address on immigration in America, gives New Yorkers a visual depiction of the nations of origin of their foreign-born neighbors. Each red section is a visual and written representation of the number of New Yorkers from each country. The more immigrants come from a country, the larger the red section is. According to Times Square Arts:
We Were Strangers Once Too champions the value of diversity in the city, and specifically the city's immigrant populations, new and old, at a time when they are increasingly under siege.
