Her Body-Positive Swim Shoot
Selena recently made a big splash with a photoshoot she did for La'marriette. Women worldwide rejoiced at the site of a superstar showing off her real, natural, and gorgeous body. By doing so, Selena is setting a new standard- to show realistic women's bodies in advertisements and fashion. We're here for that!
Here's what Selena had to say about it on her Instagram page, "What I love about this brand is that it celebrates women who love their bodies unconditionally giving themselves the grace they deserve. Hope you love it as much as I do ♥️" Oh, we do!
She Values Mental Health
If you remember, Selena took a 3-month hiatus from social media back in August 2016. This meant potentially losing out on endorsement deals and growing her massive social media status. The reason for her absence? She took a break to focus on her health while in rehab.
No doubt being as famous as she comes with intense and unrelenting demands. We love that she had the ability to recognize she needed to take a step back and focus on her health in order to move forward. Nothing is more important, and we're so happy to see someone in the spotlight unafraid to say so.
She Used Her Personal Journey With Lupus to Raise Awareness
Singing, acting, fashion, beauty... is there nothing she does wrong? How about being totally transparent about her battle with Lupus and how it has affected her? Some stars choose to stay completely private and not let the public in on such things, but by sharing her experience with her fans she has raised awareness about Lupus and chronic kidney disease- which around 37 million people in the U.S. alone suffer from.
She's Redefining Sexy
Selena Gomez once remarked at one of her concerts, “I get it all day, every day, that I’m not sexy enough. Let me tell you one thing: The sexiest thing, I think, actually I know, is class and that’s it.” We couldn't agree more. By teaching her young followers that sexiness isn't based on your physical image but rather how you treat others she is redefining sexy in a powerful way.
She's a Mom to 6 Rescue Pups
Selena is a proud mama to five rescue dogs named Baylor, Fina, Willie, Chip, Chazz, and Wallace. The singer noted that with so many dogs looking for homes, she had no other choice but to adopt from a shelter. One of them she adopted spontaneously with then-boyfriend Justin Beiber. She spotted her dog Baylor, a husky mix, during a trip to Canada with Justin. "We went to a shelter just for fun ... and we saw this adorable, adorable puppy... I literally felt like he said my name. So, I had to have him."
She Takes the High Road
No doubt there is a lot of pressure as a public figure to tell all when it comes to your love life. For Selena, that pressure was exponential given her ex: Justin Bieber. Justin starting dating now-wife Hailey Baldwin around two months after he and Selena called things quits in April of 2018. By June, Hailey and Justin were married. No doubt that one hurt, and to suffer such a difficult breakup on a public platform? No thanks. Selena took the high road, keeping mostly mum about the issue, and only channeling her emotions through her music.
Her Namesake is Selena Quintanilla, a Tejano Music Superstar
Tejano music star, Selena Quintanilla, was tragically killed in 1995- leaving behind millions of mourning fans alongside her memorable music. In an interview, Selena explained how she came to be named after the Tejano star-- "My dad and mom were huge fans... my name was going to be Priscilla, but my cousin actually took the name when she was born six months before me. They actually loved [Selena’s] music, so they just named me after her." Two Selena superstars from Texas? There must be something in the water down there.
She's a True BFF
There's nothing like your girl gang, right? Seems like Selena is well aware of this. Her friendships with the likes of Taylor Swift, Demi Lovato, and Miley Cryus. There's nothing like counting on you BFF during the ups and downs, and we love watching Selena's friendships last and flourish.
Let's face it, not all of us picked up healthy habits during quarantine. I'm looking at you, late-night Oreos and ice cream! Selena made the best of it while quarantining with her maternal grandparents (awe) and started a cooking show. The show is called Selena + Chef, and is adorable, unscripted, and well- delicious!
She's a Small Town Girl
Selena is a small-town girl who hasn't forgotten her Texas roots. The singer was born in Grand Prairie, Texas, a fairly small town near the Dallas area. When she was born, her parents were just 16 years old, and they raised her in a neighborhood that was mainly populated by other Mexican-American families. Recalling her Texas childhood Selena states, We’d play outside for hours, and my nana and her friends would be sitting with their iced tea. It wasn’t a lot, but it was great." We love that she's proud of her roots, and not afraid to share her memories with her fans.
