If you’re apologising for going after what you want, stop this very instant. In the words of the fabulous Jacqueline, stop saying sorry for being driven and a go-getter. Just go get it!
“You have this idea of the kind of writer you should be. But don’t let that keep you from the kind of writer you could be.”
This advice is gold, and the best reminder to not fall in line with what society expects us to be. And if you need a little push, imagine Jacqueline saying this line to you in her no-nonsense way.
“I have writers who write safe. And I have writers who take big swings.”
Playing safe won’t get you very far. As Jacqueline says, take the big swings. They might not always be right but they’ll never be boring. And they will make life an adventure.
“Always run towards what frightens you most.”
Turning fears into opportunities can be one of the most powerful factors that get you ahead in life and Jacqueline knew this, which is why she encouraged her team to follow this powerful advice.

“You didn’t fail me. You just failed. Sometimes, you’re just going to fail. That’s what it means to be a professional.”
The path to breaking ceilings comes with its fair share of wins and losses. It’s all about mindset. Jacqueline reminds us that it is okay to fail but to pick yourself up and keep going.
“If you can’t do it with feeling, don’t.”
Nothing that is done without passion and drive is worth doing in life, says Jacqueline. Listen to your gut and heart and not just your head, even if it means stepping outside your comfort zone.
“I expect you to make mistakes and make amends, take a leap and make a splash. And I expect you to unleash holy hell on anyone who tries to hold you back.”
As Jacqueline says, don’t back down. Haters are going to hate. You do you.
"Nevertheless, we will persist."
Jacqueline reminds us to not give up when the going gets tough. Walking away is the easy option. Staying and making it to the finish line is the one that makes the journey worth it.
“Here’s the next great mascara to give you bigger eyes to see the world. Here’s a fabulous pair of jeans. Now go climb a mountain.”
Jacquline’s speech to her staff on the magazine’s 60th anniversary was epic, and a great reminder to all of us to go beyond our potential, to push the envelope and take big risks.
“Facing the truth is really important. Ultimately, the truth always makes us stronger."
It’s hard to admit the truth sometimes. But as Jacqueline said, it can also be the most liberating feeling, and as cliched as it sounds, can set us free.
