Unholy Night: The Darkness Hunter

Unholy Night: The Darkness Hunter is a one-on-one SNES 2D fighting game developed by a team of ex-SNK staffers who had previously worked on the Samurai Showdown and The King of Fighters series. Not a bad pedigree if yo are going to put together a brand-new fighting game.

The game story revolves around a group of monster hunters who have dedicated their lives to exterminating vampires, werewolves, and other creatures of the night. Each unique fighter has eight special moves for the player to master as well as super moves that makes use of a three-level meter. When the fighter's health is low, he/she gains bonuses similar to desperation moves from older arcade fighting games.

Unholy Night is the sort of game that tries to push every bit of power out of the Super Nintendo, a console released well before most of you reading this were born. The whole thing is shoveed into a 32MB cart, but some people say it might be too much for the console. REviews note the low framrate, some random crashes, bad translation, and clunky gameplay. Still, a new game on ancient hardware with a full physical release is pretty neat.

You get the whole thing in a box just like you would back in the early 90s. Seeing a new game on the shelf alongside all your classic titles is pretty wild. I'm a huge fighting game fan earning my chops on Street Fighter 2 on Nintendo's super box. It might not be great, and surely isn't anywhere close to that legendary title, but for around $15 on Amazon it's not the worst way to spend an evening.

4X4 Jam

4x4 JAM the most unique all-terrain off-road racing game you will ever see. Find yourself behind the wheels of off-road vehicles with tilted or tapped game control. The game offers 100% total freedom to race across the varied terrains without any limitations.
Challenge your opponents on icy mountains or hot sand dunes and experience the excitement of hill climbing with custom built off-road vehicles. Jump over your opponents or roll down a steep hill - there are no rules and no boundaries in 4x4 Jam.

If that blurb doesn't get you excited you must be dead on the inside. 4x4 JAM is an interesting title for a number of reasons. Racing games can be a lot of fun and go back all the ways to the Atari 2600, but when it comes to homebrew releases the racing genre doesn't get a lot of love. In fact, I can't think of another racing game released post console death.

If you've been into the homebrew scene fo any amount of time youll notice that so many games that make it to market are for the Sega Dreamcast. It's not that the Dreamcast was the greatest console ever, it was fine but people have some serious nostalgia glasses looking back at it, but that since the console is built off off Windows CE and the console plays backups without modification, people love it for development.

4x4 JAM is neat because the game has been around for around ten years now. From a download on the Dreamcast, to a full disk release, to versions for the PSP in the "Minis" section, and even on iOS and Android, the team behind it knew they had something and havin been milking that teet for several console generations over.

Rescue your future husband as you fight through circus freaks, mafia thugs, and killer clowns!

Arm yourself with ridiculous weapons like the explosive Gun of Roses, Banana SMG, and bunny shooting Hare Trigger. Customize your character with over 25 upgrades! Each playthrough is a different experience. Earn your upgrades through the innovative Vow System, which applies risk/reward scenarios to each level! Want to unlock that Speed Reload upgrade? You'll need to say "I Do" to enemies with bonus damage and increased movement speed! Vows are optional, but worth the commitment!

Lethal Wedding is the only video game on this list that at the time of writing hasn't even hit store shelves yet. There is currently only a demo available butMega Cat Studios is one of the big players in the retro homedbrew scene with tons of releases on nearly every classic console. Hell, I even own a number of their games, so I'm excited for this one to hit the Sega Genesis. It also desn't hurt that the game look like a good bit of fun.

It's got a really neat look that reminds me a lot of Zombies Ate My Neighbors. And if you didn't notice by now, but it looks errily "inspired" by that new film that's already out of theaters about a bride fighting to stay alive. It wasn't good and starred a knock-off Margot Robbie, so, yeah. At least the game might be good!

Escape 2042: The Truth Defenders

"In the year 2042, a socialist government is in power, but nobody had foreseen progressive dictatorship that settled in. The elites of the government hid behind a sham democracy, disconnected from the life the people were leading, and acted solely in their own interests...."

You play Shun, a computer engineer and member of the Truth Defenders coalition, but you are captured by the regime and thrown into prison. With your expertise in security systems, you might've found a way to escape, but you must find your way through the maze of the high security prison! Will you be able to escape from the clutches of the prison? What lies beyond the prison?

Escape 2042 has been in development for a couple of years and is coming, or has come, to a few platoforms including Steam, but the Game Boy release it the one that caught my attention. I think some of the best work done by any developer or studio regardless of their team size, support, or budget is when they are working with limitations. And I think you can agree that there a a whole lot of limitations that come with the Game Boy.

But the fact that Escape 2042 released on other platforms shows that there is probably something to the gameplay. Even when running on the Game Boy the game looks pretty smooth and impressive. Sure, your charcater is one tiny little dude and on an ancient green-tinted screen it might be a nightmare to play, but I'm game. With so few new Game Boy releases this one at least looks wicked neat.

Ghost Blade

Ghost Blade is an intense bullet-hell shoot 'em up game, with satisfying and addictive score-based gameplay, with its tradition going back to the shooting games of the 1990s era. Designed with a modern graphic style and special effects, Ghost Blade also features an awesome 2-player mode! Ghost Blade is easy to learn, yet hard to master.

You would be screaming at me if I didn't incude a bullet-hell shooter on this list. I don't know what it is about the genre that attacts develoeprs to the scene but I'm all for it. I love me a good bullet-hell shooter so you won't find my complaining. Hell, a few hours ago I was playing some random SHMUP on Steam that only had a few reviews. I'm the perfect person for this and I'm game for some Ghost Blade action.

A lot of people who have played the game say it's pretty easy, as if that some sort of negative thing. Look, there are probably hundreds of SHMUP's out there that are built on trying to one-up each other on how hard they can be. Before people were talking about Dark Souls there were people paying money in arcades to try and beat brutally hard games.

So when a SHMUP comes along that lets more filthy casuals enjoy the experience I'm all in. Back in the day the only reason I built a MAME machine was to be able to play these brutally hard SHUMP's without losing a downpayment on a new house. So if Ghost Blade was to make a game that fun and chill to play while lietting me enjoy shooting lots of bullets I'm onboard.
