Steam has released their list of the top 100 grossing games on the gaming service for 2016. While a number of the games at the top come from 2015 (there where some good ones that year) we are just going to focus on those that came out this last year.

No Man's Sky

If you let out a sigh knowing No Man's Sky made the top of this lest don't worry, many of us feel exactly the same way.

The gameplay of No Man's Sky is built on four pillars: exploration, survival, combat, and trading. Players are free to perform within the entirety of a procedurally generated deterministic open universe, which includes over 18 quintillion (debatable) planets many with their own sets of flora and fauna.

Unfortunately the game wasn't as well-received by critics or fans thanks to not living up to what was being promoted. The only thing we learned from all of the mess is to never trust the word of Mr.. Sean Murray.

Civilization VI

I am so happy to know that the Civilization brand is one that is still respected in the video game world. I'm such a huge fan that I still have a campaign running of Civilization II on on old laptop at home.

Sid Meier's Civilization VI is a turn-based 4X video game and the sixth main title in the Civilization series that is the biggest time stink in history.

Sean Bean, who narrated the early trailers of the game, also provided his voicework for quotes read to the player as they progress along the technology and civics tree. Oh, and he dies in the trailer because of course he does.

3

Dark Souls III

Fun fact: Development of Dark Souls III began in mid-2013, prior to the release of Dark Souls II whose team didn't include the series creator.

Praise given to the game's visuals and combat mechanics that helped the game stand out. Dark Souls III is almost like a faster paced version of FromSoftware's previous game, Bloodborne.

If you like hard games then you don't want to miss this one. There is a reason when a game is hard they say it's pulling a "Dark Souls" maneuver.

4

Tom Clancy's The Division

Tom Clancy's The Division has some serious issues during launch because it wouldn't be a UbiSoft game is someting wasn't completly borked upon release.

That said Ubisoft has stated that the game broke the company's record for highest number of first-day sales. Then again I picked up The Division this November during "Black Friday" for only $9 on Amazon for the Xbox One.

That's a little funny considering Black Friday was the day when a smallpox pandemic, transmitted by a virus planted on banknotes, sweeps through New York City in the game.

5

Total War: Warhammer

Total War: Warhammer is a turn-based strategy and real-time tactics video game developed by Creative Assembly and published by Sega.

While the Total War series has always done well, mostly sticking to real-life historical settings. The game mixed things up this last year by using the Warhammer license.

The Warhammer universe has more hits than misses in video game form, so knowing that Total War: Warhammer was an excellent game was a real treat.

6

XCOM 2

XCOM 2 is a turn-based tactics video game developed by Firaxis Games (the second on this list after CivVI).

As with previous games in the series, XCOM 2 casts the player as the commander of the eponymous military organization, now reduced to a resistance force opposing the ongoing alien occupation of the planet.

The neat spin is that the aliens have taken over and you, as part of the resistance, are tasked with taking earth back. of the resistence, are tasked with taking earth back.

7

DOOM

DOOM proved that you can remake a vintage gaming series and still make it work criticaly and comemrcially.

It's fun, brutal and let's you get right to the action and refuses to give you a break

8

Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley is an indie farming simulation role-playing video game developed by ConcernedApe and published by Chucklefish Games.

The game is essentially a much more massive version of Harvest Moon only for the PC. This is pretty cool and it seems people thought so too as the game sold like gangbusters.

What's even more impressive is that the game is the work of a one person team. Just goes to show that a single person can do what major studios with hundreds of staffers can't.

9

Stellaris

Stellaris is a 4X grand strategy video game developed and published by Paradox Interactive. What's interesting here is that this is the 3rd strategy game and the second 4X one on the list.

Players control ships and research vessels among other things, combat is more centered towards the bigger picture, preparation, and strategy. There are also diplomatic options such as alliances and trade agreements with other races.

PC gamers are a diverse bunch and it's great to see that classic genres from the early days of PC gaming are still alive and well.

10

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided had a lot to live up to with Human Revolution being such a fantastic product (let's forget that mobile game "thing"). Fans of the series were excited about this prequel continuation and bought it in droves.

Thankfully the game was pretty darn good offering up more diverse options for completing tasks and a larger, deeper world to explore. Although we could skip all the bullshit microtransactions in a single-player game. Yuck!

This may be one of the reasons that the game didn't sell as well as Human Revolution. Although it did do well enough to make this list and probably earn a sequel.
