RED
RED is a fun action adventure comedy based on a comic book series of the same name. It was released in 2010 and was directed by Robert Schwentke.
Bruce Willis stars as Frank Moses, a retired CIA-black ops agent who tears up his pension checks so that he has a reason to talk to Sarah Ross over at the Pension Office. After being the target of a failed assassination, Frank embarks on a quest to find out who is targeting him. But he needs help. After tracking a few old "associates," Frank finds the rabbit hole just gets deeper and deeper.
Surrogates
Let's start this list off with a bang: Surrogates, a 2009 sci-fi action/adventure film that explores a near-future world where humans interact with the world through the eponymous avatars called surrogates.
Willis stars as Tom Greer, an FBI agent who is investigating the deaths of two people who were killed when their surrogates were destroyed. Surrogate operators should be immune to pain during operation, let alone death. As Greer investigates further, all the signs of a conspiracy start to become very clear. Can he prevent a cataclysm that is intended to reshape human society as they know it?
Armageddon
Armageddon is a 1998 sci-fi film with an illustrious cast and Bruce Willis as the main protagonist. SPOILERS AHEAD...
Not many movies can pull off what Armageddon does. As an asteroid the size of Texas speeds along a trajectory headed right for Earth, NASA comes up with a plan to drill into the asteroid and detonate a thermonuclear bomb to split it into and which would cause both halves to miss the Earth. Needless to say, things don't go necessarily as planned, and one person has to stay behind to detonate the bomb manually (guess who).
Looper
Looper is one of those movies you need to watch a few times to get what's really going on. But it is definitely worth those multiple views.
Any movie that deals with time travel and multiple timelines is going to be a little hard to follow. Essentially Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt play the same character, Joe, a Looper, but aged 30 years apart. A Looper is basically a hitman in the past who "whacks" masked people sent by a crime syndicate from the future. But things start to go awry when Old Joe appears in front of Young Joe without a mask and escapes. Throw in a little telekinesis, and you have a solid film with some serious replay value.
Sin City
Oh yes, you knew this was coming. Sin City: the 2005 neo-noir film told in a series of vignettes. The movie was directed by Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller.
The cast in this movie is just insane: Bruce Willis, Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Brittany Murphy, Elijah Wood...the list just goes on and on. A masterfully made film told through groundbreaking cinematography, it is perhaps one of the best adapted graphic novels in cinematic history, and for good reason, as Frank Miller is also the original author of the graphic novel that the movie was adapted from. Do yourself a favor and go see this movie. Now.
12 Monkeys
12 Monkeys is one of those amazing movies that absolutely everyone needs to see. ESPECIALLY if you're into time travel.
The year is 2035, and humanity is forced to live underground due to the outbreak of a devastating virus that wipes out most of humanity in 1996. Bruce Willis plays James Cole, a prisoner who is trained and chosen to embark on a mission to the past. His mission is to find a cure to the virus so that humanity can once again populate the surface by following the supposed creators of the virus: the Army of the 12 Monkeys. Unfortunately, things aren't all that straightforward as Cole is haunted by a eerily familiar vision. Will Cole be able to figure out how to save the future?
Pulp Fiction
There are so many reasons to watch the neo-noir classic Pulp Fiction written and directed by Quentin Tarantino; Bruce Willis is merely one of them.
The film is told through a series of vignettes, not in chronological order, which makes for an extremely refreshing cinematic experience. With a star-studded cast of John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, and Uma Thurman, there's little to be desired in Pulp Fiction as it makes us laugh, cry, and recoil in horror all at the same time. You've got a fever, and the only prescription is Pulp Fiction.
Die Hard
Ohh...Die Hard's not number one? What is this travesty of a list? ...Settle down, settle down, there's an even better Willis film in the number one slot...
Die Hard is a movie that needs no introduction. It is quite literally the non plus ultra and template of the modern action film. The story follows Bruce Willis' John McClane as he attempts to reconcile with his wife, Holly; but gets caught up in trying to stop German terrorist Hans Gruber, played by Alan Rickman, from stealing tons of cash in the form of bearer bonds from the Nakatomi corporation. As the epitome of action films, Die Hard features explosions galore, plenty of one-liners, and has spawned a franchise with several sequels to its name. Nobody needs to tell you to see this film.
The Fifth Element
Yes. The Fifth Element. This 1997 movie represents all the best of Bruce Willis and his action adventures in an incredibly badass sci-fi thriller which was expertly crafted by director Luc Besson.
With spectacular performances by Mila Jovovich, Bruce Willis, and Gary Oldman, the story follow Willis' character Dallas as he attempts to make sense of a crazy situation: A great evil threatens the Universe and reemerges every 5,000 years; The Fifth Element (Jovovich's Leeloo) must merge with the four Elemental Stones in order to save the universe.
The Fifth Element gets extra props for creating an amazingly creative and immersive interplanetary culture on top of its action awesomeness. Featuring a future world and aliens both good and bad, the movie was polarizing critically, but a financial success. You won't regret seeing this film. It's a masterpiece.
