Colour

Night Furies come in tints of color. For example, Toothless is a male, green eyed, blue tint Night Fury. It can be extremely hard to tell what tint it is because it's only visible in certain lighting or when they engage "Alpha Mode". Also they can have many different eye colors and the two eyes aren't always the same color. Additionally most Night Furies have some sort of dark grey birthmark on their head that can be as small as an ant or cover their entire head and neck.

Some believe that all female Night Furies are white. However, I think that a heavy tint Night Fury is only born once every 100 years. A heavy tint Night Fury can be any color. Including white. Heavy tint Night Furies look like they are completely of their color such as the heavy white tint Night Fury above.

Hunting

Night Furies usually hunt and fly at night but sometimes they will wake up before sunset or they change their sleeping schedule according to their riders schedule as seen with Toothless and Hiccup. Night Furies prey mainly on fish but if there are no fish available, they will prey on medium to large mammals such as boars, sheep or yaks. he glides at around 130 feet (39.6 meters) above the water scanning for any sized fish as small and defenceless as sardines, to as big and dangerous as a great white shark. The moment he see a silhouette of a fish or a school of fish decently near the surface, he plummets to the fish at astonishing swiftness and speed as he enters the water he arches back his neck just right so the force doesn't break his neck. Once his front half is submerged, he opens his mouth as wide as possible to grab as much fish as he can in one mouthful. When hunting mammals, Night Furies tend to soar over grassy meadows or clearings looking for anything out in the open and vulnerable to an attack from above. As soon as he spots a target, he circles around a few times knowing that mammals are usually smarter than most fish. When he finds the right time and place to strike, he dives towards his prey and lands on top of its prey with such speed and force that it can break a Nadders skull ending the poor things life before it even know what hit it.

Attacking humans

Night Furies usually avoid humans but when they do attack humans it's because they either have a bad experience with them or the see other dragons attacking/getting attacked by humans. They usually hide in the stars observing and waiting for the right time and place the strike. When they do they dive towards their target at incredible speed and shoot a acetylene and oxygen shaped plasma charge that can be strong enough to obliterate a ship or gentle enough to be deflected by a wooden shield.

Night Fury claw to claw combat

youtube embed goes here!

As seen in this video Night Furies can be both extremely cute and extremely ferocious. It's best catch one when its in a good mood but when you catch one in a bad mood it's most definitely a force to be reckoned with. When their babies, Night Furies learn a lot about other dragon strengths and weaknesses so if they happen to to run into a dragon in bad mood. If they can they will always try to avoid combat but if that is not an option, they'll try to use their stealth and knowledge on the species of dragon in question.

When two Night Furies have to fight each other for things like mates, territory and food, the challenger will try to get the other Night Furie to chase him for a while to tire him out so he is easier to fight. Once they finally get to claw to claw combat, they usually avoid using their blasts for a similar reason as rattle snakes not biting when fighting each other.

Raising young

Night Furies can only lay one egg at a time and they can't lay more than 4 to 8 eggs in their lifetime. Therefore they are extremely protective of their eggs and will fly hundreds of miles inland away from its coastal habitat to safely lay its eggs. Also another reason the lay their egg on mountain peaks is because their eggs require powerful electrical storms to hatch and when they do they come out with a large plasma explosion. And because of their need the storms to hatch its egg means that the odd Skrill may threaten the egg and its parents. Making the two species natural enemies. Baby Night Furies are born weaker compared to other dragons which can somewhat fly and breath fire at birth. However, Night Furies need to be taught to do these things by their parents. They do learn a lot though playing with and imitating its parents. They continue living with their parents until they are about 7 in dragon years but they won't stop playing with and imitating other creatures (including humans) until it is around 25 in dragon years.

Habitat

The reason why the people of Berk don't see many Night Furies other than toothless is because Night Furies aren't native to Barbaric Archipelago or any of the surrounding archipelagos. They are native to warmer climates in eastern Europe. Not the arctic like islands of the Barbaric Archipelago. Night Furies have evolved to spend over half in caves and the rest of their time in the air, hunting and messing around. Night Furies have evolved to live in the caves and only come out at night to hunt and exercise. We can see this by looking at the features, abilities and some behaviors of Night Furies. Such as how they sometimes hang upside down and echolocate like a bat. Also their catlike eyes offer superb night vision in dark caves or at night. Also Toothless seems to have no problem at all with being in caves which other dragons like Stormfly and Meatlug get nervous when being inside.

Taming

Paragraph from the How to Train Your Dragon Wiki at http://howtotrainyourdragon.wikia.com/wiki/Night_Fury

Training a Night Fury is very hard. Hiccup trained Toothless without too much difficulty because Toothless couldn't fly and was stuck in a cove. A wild Night Fury will likely just fly away and ignore you unless you catch its interest (a good way to do that is with fish). The only other way is to catch it (which is extremely hard since no-one before Hiccup has ever done it). It is preferable to catch it without hurting it (which is even harder than catching it). Another way is to find its egg and train it when it hatches. This is even harder since Night Furies are the rarest of all the dragon species. Yet a third way is to nurse one back to health, then try and bond with it.

Night Furies are very reclusive and distrustful. If ever found, the first step to training it would be to gain its attention, as Hiccup did by presenting it with fish and drawing him in dirt. Next, one has to gain its trust and show that you are of no threat which Hiccup had done by throwing away his blade. Like training most other dragons, training this dragon requires mutual respect and trust. After that, the good old method of strengthening a bond via placing a hand on his snout works best.

Alpha Mode

From How to Train Your Dragon 2 by Dreamworks

Night Furies engage "alpha mode" as some call it by literally charging up themselves with blasts until they are glowing at the ridges and throat. This impressive dominance display only engages when they are protecting something they hold dear from something that you would think crush a Night Fury in a fight. The reason that they do this when their loved ones are threatened is because the blasts are then more concentrated and are more powerful and increase their firepower from a 14 to a 16. But this is only until the danger has passed. Also the force of them charging up is enough to blast trough 6 feet of Bewilderbeast ice! But, this force comes from its mouth and back so hiccup was safe when Toothless engaged alpha mode to protect hiccup he was safe. However, many think that this is the form of a Night Fury Titian but Titian dragons stay how they are and they have more horns and ridges.

Titans

Titan wing Night Furies still have that distinct streamlined shape. However the once the Night Fury changes to its titan wing stage its head does become a bit thicker as well with the rest of its body as it gains more muscle. Also the tail becomes a little thicker and shorter as well with the wing. Also as Valka demonstrates in How To Train Your Dragon 2, if you count the earlike appendages on its chin you can estimate the age of the dragon. Therefore titan wing Night Furies have many of these earlike appendages. In addition the horn like ridges on the back on their legs become much larger, thinner and more pointed along with its back spine. Also their firepower is increased from a 14 to 16. The same amount of an increase as when it engages "alpha mode".

Differences between Night Furies and Light Furies

From the How To Train Your Dragon 3 official trailer

Abilities:
Night Furies and Light Furies have a different set of special abilities. While they also share many such as the ability to fly at supersonic speeds and to fire oxygen shaped blasts, Light Furies can’t harness lightning or engage “alpha mode”. However they can fire a large blast then fly through it and seemingly disappear. But this is probably an illusion

Anatomy:
Light Furies and Night Furies can look very similar from afar but you can see many differences between the two subspecies. For example, Light Furies have only four nubs on the back of their head while a Night Fury can have up to 14. Also instead of back spines, Light Furies have a long ridge extending from the top of their neck to the bottom tail fins, which have 7 ridges compared to a Night Furies 5. Additionally, Light Furies primary tail fins have 4 ridges and a Night Fury has 3 on each fin. Night Furies have a more streamlined head that Light Furies.

Habitat

from MartinBlur at deviantart

Light Furies have likely come from the Arctic Circle. This would explain the smaller ear nubs, the color, and even why she seems glittery. She adapted smaller ears nubs so she lets off less body head in the cold. She’s white and glittery to blend in seamlessly with the ice and snow of her home.

Color

From the How To Train Your Dragon 3 official trailer

Light Furies also have tints. Ranging from blue to red to brown. They can also have different eye colors such as the red tint, blue eyed, female Light Fury above.

Disappearing blast

From the How To Train Your Dragon 3 official trailer

Light Furies have the ability to fire a large blast in front of them and fly into it and disappear. They do this in a variety of situations from fleeing from humans to saving a friend. It is currently unknown how they do this but it is likely a illusion.
