16.04 - A father's pride...

Astley Cooper School is celebrating its best GSCE examination results for the third consecutive year.

A number of parents joined their children at the school as the envelopes with the GCSE results were opened.

Martina Scibetta, who achieved top grades in all her subjects, including A*s in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and History, was accompanied by her father Joseph.

He said: "I don’t think Martina would have achieved what she has without the support and encouragement from the staff.

"I’m extremely pleased with the community spirit at Astley Cooper. Martina came here from an all girls’ school in London where she was not expected to do so well and now she is staying on to do A levels in Biology, Chemistry and History."

Among the students collecting their results today was Berkhamsted School pupil Joe Beadle, who achieved 12A* grades, an A grade in Additional Maths and an A in AS Level Creative Writing.

In addition to his stellar academic achievements, Joe’s musical accomplishments are astonishing: he achieved the Licentiate of Trinity College London (LTCL) diploma earlier in the year (recognised by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority as the equivalent of an honours degree) and plays the piano for the National Youth Orchestra.

After collecting his results today, he was preparing to go on tour to France with the NYO, following appearances with the orchestra at the BBC Proms earlier in the summer. Joe plans to study French, Spanish, English Literature and Maths at Berkhamsted Sixth in September.

15.18 - Reaction from headteachers

Our Biology, English and Drama departments will be very proud of their students who are celebrating one of their highest A* percentages.

10.30 - How the new GCSE grading system works

Just to make things extra confusing for all of us, there's a new grade system to get used to! So here's how it works....

Under the new system introduced for this summer's exams, traditional A* to G grades have been replaced with a 9 to 1 system, with 9 the highest mark.

Except...

So far this system has only been introduced in England, with Wales and Northern Ireland also making changes to their GCSEs, but retaining the traditional grading scale.

And the new marking system only applies to three subjects - maths, English language, and English literature. The other subjects will have the new system phased in over the next two years.

Grades 9, 8 and 7 are broadly equivalent to an A* and A; grades 6, 5 and 4 are in line with grades B to C; a 3 would be broadly similar to a D grade; and 2 and 1 cover grades E, F and G. There will still be a U (ungraded) mark.

Many students are concerned about what is the equivalent of a C grade, which can be key for getting onto A-Level courses. A grade 4 is being called a "standard pass" by Education Secretary Justine Greening. Grade 5 is defined as a "good pass".

It's also interesting that so far the government has spent £380,000 explaining it to schools, students and employers...

10.10 - Excitement at Adeyfield

Interestingly, students can pick up their results at the school until 12.30pm. Now we all liked a lie-in as a teenager, but we wonder if any could actually wait until the afternoon to pick up their results?!
