Peaky Blinders

It may have been set in Birmingham but the period gangster drama was filmed in Leeds. The team was based at Studio 81 and filmed in locations including Bolton Abbey, Leeds Town Hall and the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway. Executive Producer Frith Tiplady praised Leeds as a location.

Happy Valley

Penned by Sally Wainwright and filmed in locations around her childhood home in the Calder Valley including Halifax, Sowerby Bridge, Mytholmroyd and Todmorden. The main character, Catherine Cawood, is played by Sarah Lancashire and the cast includes James Norton who grew up in Malton.

Brideshead Revisited

The 1981 television adaptation of Evelyn Waugh’s novel shot Castle Howard into the spotlight. Its stars, Jeremy Irons, Anthony Andrews and Diana Quick became synonymous with the North Yorkshire house. When the feature film was made in 2008, the house reprised its role.

Death Comes to Pemberley

Not only did it star Yorkshire-born actress Anna Maxwell Martin, but the sequel to Jane Austen’s timeless classic, written by the doyenne of crime writing, PD James, was also filmed extensively in Yorkshire including Castle Howard and Harewood House.

This is England

Maybe it should be called This is Sheffield. The pub in all three series is the John O’Gaunt in Sheffield and for This is England 90, lead character Shaun can be found at a house in Stannington, while Woody and Lol are at Lowedges. Norton College is the college attended by Smell and her gothic friends.
