Technology has tons of benefits for adolescents and children when used wisely. The internet has some wonderful programs that improve kids’ cognitive and language development. Plus, technology can be life-changing for children with special needs or learning problems. 

However, like all things in life, it comes with pros and cons—the use of technology without supervision can have a damaging impact on a child’s emotional and social wellbeing, to say the least.

Even though there are above 80,000 apps that are labeled as educational, only a few are actually beneficial for your child. “Interactive apps” should offer a lot more than “tapping and swiping.” Look for credible sites for reviews about kid-friendly games, apps and programs, so that you can make the best choice for your children.

Teach your kids that content once shared on the internet or with others, cannot be removed or deleted completely. Teach teens the dangers of predators, bullies and the repercussions of sharing inappropriate pictures. Warn them about the likelihood of sex offenders lurking around in chat rooms, social networking platforms and online gaming—waiting to exploit children at their first chance.

Pro tip: Remember that kids will be kids and they are likely to make mistakes. Try to handle your child’s errors with empathy and turn them into teachable moments.
