Technology has tons of benefits for adolescents and children when used wisely. The internet has some wonderful programs that improve kids’ cognitive and language development. Plus, technology can be life-changing for children with special needs or learning problems.

However, like all things in life, it comes with pros and cons—the use of technology without supervision can have a damaging impact on a child’s emotional and social wellbeing, to say the least.

That’s why it’s important that parents know how to balance life and technology for their children. Here’s how families can help children use technology for good:

Set limits on screen time and encourage outdoor play

Like all activities your child indulges in, media usage needs to have reasonable limits. Set a time limit for gadget usage and clearly communicate it with your child—also make sure to strictly follow it.

Make sure that your child participates in physical activities like playing hide-and-seek with older siblings, “playing house,” or participating in sports—unplugged playtime should be a daily priority for young children.

Screen time doesn’t mean alone time

Supervision is crucial, especially during your child’s early years. Co-view, co-engage, and co-play with your kids when they’re using gadgets. This promotes bonding and encourages social interaction. A great way to teach your child gaming etiquette and good sportsmanship is to play a video game with them.

Watching family-friendly shows with your little one gives you the opportunity to share your life experiences and perspectives with them. Instead of simply monitoring them online, interact with your child to understand what they’re getting themselves involved in, and be a part of it.

Do your homework on apps for kids

Even though there are above 80,000 apps that are labeled as educational, only a few are actually beneficial for your child. “Interactive apps” should offer a lot more than “tapping and swiping.” Look for credible sites for reviews about kid-friendly games, apps and programs, so that you can make the best choice for your children.

Teach children the importance of privacy

Teach your kids that content once shared on the internet or with others, cannot be removed or deleted completely. Teach teens the dangers of predators, bullies and the repercussions of sharing inappropriate pictures. Warn them about the likelihood of sex offenders lurking around in chat rooms, social networking platforms and online gaming—waiting to exploit children at their first chance.

Pro tip: Remember that kids will be kids and they are likely to make mistakes. Try to handle your child’s errors with empathy and turn them into teachable moments.

The STEAM Ahead curriculum offered by the Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy uses science and technology to promote enhanced learning and creativity. Children use technology for engaging activities like learning how pulley and ramps work and their implementation in real life.
