Quarterback
Quarterback
You are the leader of the offence, and the guy who everyone looks to when you need a game-winning drive. Experienced, skilled and a leader, you'll to be as mentally fit as you are physically to play this position. Having a strong arm and accuracy when throwing a football doesn't hurt either.
Running Back
Running Back
This is an offensive position on a football team whose responsibility it is to run the ball and occasionally catch short passes.
Receiver
Receiver
Receivers, whether it be wideouts or tight ends, need to have good catching skills. Their primary job is to catch the ball, but good route running and speed helps a lot as well. Tight Ends must also be able to block well, and wideouts too in some instances.
Offensive Lineman
Offensive Lineman
The Big Uglies. The most underappreciated position in the game, yet, the most important (imho). They not only are in sole charge of protecting a team's most valuable asset, the Quarterback, but they also open up gaps for the running back. While it isn't glamorous, offensive lineman are the lifeblood of an offence. When they play well, it can lift a team, but if not, it can sink one.
Defensive Lineman
Defensive Lineman
The Defensive Line is responsible for sacking the quarterback, stopping the run, or creating holes for linebackers to exploit. Depending on the scheme of a defence (3-4 vs 4-3) and the coach, their roles can vary. You must be quick to react, strong, a good tackler, and most of all, good at getting off blocks.
Linebacker
Linebacker
Like Defensive Lineman, the role of linebacker varies. He might be a great tackler and leader, a smaller guy with better coverage skills, or a speed rusher.
Cornerback
Cornerback
Cornerbacks may not be the most physically imposing player on a defence, but they make up for this with speed and coverages skills. They can match up man to man with a wide receiver and shadow him on his route, or stick to a particular part of the field and watch the Quarterback or any receiver that may enter his zone.
Safety
Safety
Safeties have to always be alert. They have to be smart, strong and fast, because when you're the last line of the defence, your skill can usually mean the difference between an interception or touchdown for the offence.
