Amanda Palmer
Amanda Palmer
Amanda's most famous for Oasis, which is a peppy and upbeat song about a girl getting raped and then having an abortion. Fun, isn't it? She's caused a lot of trouble by singing about rape, abortion, feminism, and death. She also stirs up controversy by going completely naked- and not shaving- and relying on fan donations to fund her music so she can give away her albums for nearly free. That last one really doesn't seem so bad, though.
Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga
Most of us know Lady Gaga because of her love for weird clothes and controversial topics. Her more popular controversial tunes are about religion and sexuality. She caused the most heat by releasing her song Judas on Easter. Yikes. She also likes to get people talking by wearing meat, plastic, nun outfits, seashell thongs, or sometimes nothing at all.
Madonna
Madonna
Her antics may not be as big of a deal today, but in the 80's they were inconceivable. Madonna's caused quite a bit of trouble by wearing underwear outside her clothes, graphic sexuality, including multiple religions and cultures in her sexual escapades, and going completely nude. She also managed to fuel some conversation by criticizing other artists and adopting Malawian children.
Miley Cyrus
Miley Cyrus
Maybe she wouldn't be so controversial if she didn't used to be a child star, but Miley causes more trouble than nearly any other pop singer. Drugs, partying, ambiguous sexuality, full nudity, grinding on Robin Thicke, and crazy outfits are a normal Tuesday night for her. She's also stirred trouble by feuding other celebrities and non-stop vulgarity, whether its in her language, music, or performances.
M.I.A.
M.I.A.
M.I.A. is probably the most controversial female rapper out there. Her biggest controversy was the music video for her song Born Free, which shows a bunch of redheaded kids being kidnapped and then brutally killed by a SWAT team. Other than that, she likes to rap about oppressive governments, immigration, sexuality, and how messed up America is. M.I.A.'s also gotten people talking by wearing revealing outfits while very, very pregnant and flipping off the camera at the Superbowl .
Marilyn Manson
Marilyn Manson
Abortion, graphic sexuality, dressing up deaf groupies in lunch meats, Satanism, and real blood. Not much else to say.
Eminem
Eminem
Eminem is probably the most controversial rapper of this generation. He's turned the most heads by rapping about murdering his ex-wife and then dumping her body while his daughter watches. If it's not murder, it's usually a form of misogyny, homophobia, violence, drugs, and uncontainable anger. Hey, at least he channelled his anger into music instead of actually murdering someone.
Kurt Cobain
Kurt Cobain
Kurt Cobain was controversial in the best possible way. He really didn't like judgmental people, and did everything in his power to fight prejudice. This meant making out with dudes in Saturday Night Live, writing songs about rape victims, and making music videos with imagery of racism. He also didn't like lipsyncing, so when he was forced to lipsync a pre-recorded track, he did it badly on purpose to ruin the entire performance. Other than that, Kurt liked to sing about depression, get married in his pajamas, and hump the cameras during live performances.
