Juanfran grew up in Real Madrid and he made a debut with the first team in 2004, but it was at Atleti where his football turned him into an idol for the colchoneros.

The Sevilla player was on loan at Real Madrid during the 2006/07 season. Atlético bought him the next season but was welcomed at Vicente Calderon with boos because the previous season he had the chance to play for Atleti and decided that Real would fit him better.
