An expert at difficult situations...

But on Wednesday, John stumbled into one of the most frightening scenarios he'd ever faced.

Roberto Clemente Bridge

Around 3 PM, after a quick lunch at Jimmy John's, Tumpane walked across the Roberto Clemente Bridge and headed back to work.

Shortly into his walk, Tumpane spotted a woman climbing over a railing and looking to the Allegheny River below.

Confused and frightened at what might be happening, Tumpane ran to the woman and asked her what she was doing.

Participant say

I just wanted to get a better look of the city from this side.

Participant say

Oh no. You don’t want to do that. It’s just as good over here. Let’s go grab some lunch and talk.

Participant say

No, no, no. I’m better off on this side. Just let me go.

Participant say

I’m not going to let you go. Let’s talk this out. We’ll get you back over here.

Participant say

No one wants to help me. Just let me go.

Participant say

No, we’re here to help you.

Participant say

You’ll forget me tomorrow.

Participant say

I’ll never forget you. You can have my promise on that.

Tumpane quietly asks astounded witnesses to call police...

John quickly moves into action!

As the realization of the woman's attempted suicide begins to sink in, Tumpane grabs a hold of her and refuses to let her go.

“I was lucky enough to be there to help and try to think of everything I could do, hanging on to her. At times, she wanted to go the other way. I was like, ‘Not on my watch, please.’ We were just hanging on, said Tumpane.

"I was thinking, ‘God, this has got to be a good ending, not a bad ending,’ and held on for dear life."

Within minutes of calling 911, police officers arrived and helped pull the woman to safety. Paramedics readied the ambulance and the woman was taken to a nearby hospital for non life-threatening injuries.

But before she was taken away, Tumpane knelt next to the woman and tried to comfort her with prayer.
