Beginning life as a happy child (played by Finn Elliot), Lewis' life is turned upside down when his father Gilbert returns from WWII and his mother suffers a terrible accident. Lonely and misunderstood, he begins to feel further and further apart from society - and takes drastic action to ease his inner turmoil.

The free-spirited mother of Lewis, Elizabeth struggles to fit in with her small-minded neighbours and turns to drink as medication. But when she makes a terrible decision, her family feel the consequences...

Lewis father had a stern Victorian upbringing, which he intends to pass on to his son – but when tragedy strikes, he finds himself completely unable to deal with deeper emotional issues. Especially when his son's odd behaviour has his neighbours and colleagues talking.

As the younger daughter of Dicky and Claire, Kit has to bear the brunt of family rows while her perfect sister Tamsin can do no wrong. But a simple act of kindness from Lewis gives her hope – and an obsession that will last for years.

Claire has status and prosperity in her role as Dicky's wife – but she secretly knows the monster that lurks beneath his facade. Still, that won't stop her lashing out at her own daughter, or anyone else unlucky enough to break the social codes of 1950s Britain.
