He is best known for his portrayal of Severus Snape, in the Harry Potter film series.

It remains unclear what kind of cancer Rickman had, or how long he had been suffering, those details will probably be released at a later date. What is clear, is that he will be sorely missed.

For many, his loss is a huge blow, but at least we have two more films to look forward to. Rickman will take his final turn starring in "Eye In The Sky", an action thriller, opposite Helen Mirren and Aaron Paul, and in "Alice:Through the Looking Glass", where he voiced the Blue Caterpillar.

Both are set to be released later this year

J.K. Rowling tweeted “There are no words to express how shocked and devastated I am to hear of Alan Rickman’s death. He was a magnificent actor & a wonderful man.” Hers was one of many celebrity tributes.

Daniel Radcliffe said of Rickman, "He was so encouraging of me both on set and in the years post-Potter. I’m pretty sure he came and saw everything I ever did on stage both in London and New York. He didn’t have to do that. I know other people who’ve been friends with him for much much longer than I have and they all say ‘if you call Alan, it doesn’t matter where in the world he is or how busy he is with what he’s doing, he’ll get back to you within a day."

"I'll carry the lessons he taught me for the rest of my life."

R.I.P. Alan Rickman. We are sorry you had to leave so soon.
