But this past Sunday, the Pope gave a statement regarding LGBT people that shocked many; "I repeat what the Catechism of the Catholic Church says: that they[LGBT people] must not be discriminated against, that they must be respected and accompanied pastorally,"

Pope Francis even spoke of the poor and Women-"I believe that the church not only should apologize to the person who is gay whom it has offended," he added, "but has to apologize to the poor, to exploited women, to children exploited for labor; it has to ask forgiveness for having blessed many weapons."

Many within the Church are calling this a "groundbreaking moment", this is the first time in the history of Catholicism that a Pope has addressed the LGBT community and asked for their forgiveness. Although it's unclear if this will change the Catholic Church at large, it certainly is a step in the right direction!
