The Three Sisters, Glencoe

The Three Sisters, part of Bidean nam Bian, a mountain which lies to the south of Glen Coe, are a sight that lives long in the memory of any tourist lucky enough to see them.

The Sisters - Gearr Aonach (Short Ridge) and Aonach Dubh (Black Ridge) and Beinn Fhada (Long Hill) - dominate the landscape for miles around and are a perfect example of how breath-taking Scotland's Highlands can be.

Edinburgh Castle

It's debatable to say which of the landmarks on this list are the most famous but this castle, which dominates the skyline of the capital, must be there or thereabouts.

It definitely takes the crown for the most popular paid tourist attraction in the country and is home to Crown Jewels and the Stone of Destiny.

Fairy Pools, Skye

Nothing sums up the ethereal quality of Scotland's landscape quite like the Fairy Pools on Skye.

The bodies of water, which lie at the foot of the Black Cuillin Mountains, are aptly named; other-worldly, the turquoise water and cascading waterfalls give you impression that creatures from Scotland's myths do bathe here.

Finnich Glen

A bit of hidden gem this one, the gorgeous Finnich Glen (and The Devil's Pulpit), lies just south of Drymen, near Loch Lomond.

The 100 foot deep gorge will already be famous with fans of Outlander after it was used in an episode to represent the Liar’s Spring.

Vivid green moss covers its walls, while the winding passage plays tricks with the light and the sandstone tinges the water red giving it a magical atmosphere.

Luskentyre beach, Isle of Harris

Consistently named on any list that ranks the UK's top beaches, Luskentyre beach on the Isle of Harris is a favourite with travelers and locals alike.

The beach is famed for its white sandy beach and turquoise blue waters, viewing it, you'd be surprised to find you are still in Scotland and not the Mediterranean.

Urquhart Castle, Loch Ness

Not only is Loch Ness home to Nessie, arguably the world's most famous fresh water monster, it is also the site of the spectacular Urquhart Castle.

Arguably one of the most recognisable castles in Scotland, this 13th century fortification played a large part in Scotland's war of independence and was subsequently reduced to ruins during the Jacobean uprising.

Situated on the north-western shore it offers unparalleled views of Loch Ness.

Castle Stalker

A remote castle surrounded by gorgeous stretches of water, Castle Stalker is situated on a tidal islet on Loch Laich, around 25 miles north of Oban on the west coast of Scotland.

Famous for appearing in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the castle's name is said to derive from the Gaelic word Stalcaire, which means Hunter, and the tower sits on a tidal islet on Loch Laich, an inlet off Loch Linnhe.

Old Man of Hoy, Orkney

Scotland isn't short of impressive rock formations, but this 449-foot sea stack on the island of Hoy, is one of the most intriguing for the fact that it may soon collapse into the sea when the erosion that formed it overtakes it.

Formed from Old Red Sandstone, it is currently tallest sea stack in Britain.

Culzean Castle, Ayrshire

Looking like it could have been taken from a film or a fairytale, Culzean is an idyllic castle located on the Ayrshire coast.

Designed by architect Robert Adam, Culzean dates back to the 18th century and is widely considered to be one of Scotland's most beautiful buildings.

Glenfinnan Viaduct

Harry Potter fans will no doubt recognise this landmark from the scenes where Harry and his friends are making their way to their school on the Hogwarts express.

Situated at the head of Loch Shiel, the viaduct attracts thousands of visitors each year. at 380 metres it is the longest concrete railway bridge in Scotland and crosses the River Finnan at a height of 100 feet.

Fingal's Cave, Staffa

This sea cave, formed completely in hexagonally jointed basalt, is arguably the most famous - and most unique - of Scotland's caves.

Described by Sir Walter Scott as "one of the most extraordinary places" he had ever beheld. A trip to Fingal's Cave is truly unforgettable.

The cave is said to be named after Fingal, the supposed father of Ossian, traditional bard of the Gaels.

Old Man of Storr, Skye

The second old man of the islands on this list, the Old Man of Storr is arguably even more impressive than its relation on Hoy.

A large pinnacle of rock that stands high and can be seen for miles around, it part of the Trotternish ridge and looks like it could be a landscape from an alien planet.

Which is exactly why in 2012, it was used in the filming of the science-fiction movie Prometheus.

Skara Brae, Orkney

This stone-built Neolithic settlement has grown massively popular over the past decade or so, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is considered to be older than Stonehenge.

Located on the west coast of Mainland, the largest island in the Orkney archipelago, the site is considered to be Europe's most complete Neolithic village.

Broch of Mousa, Shetland

Situated on the remote island of Mousa off the coast of Shetland, the Broch is described as an amazingly preserved example of an Iron Age round tower and amongst the best-preserved prehistoric buildings in Europe.

Remote and beautiful, it may be one of the hardest landmarks to get to on this list but it is worth the effort.

Grey Mare's Tail, Moffat

Who doesn't love a waterfall? At 60 metres, the Grey Mare's Tail in Moffat is one of the most impressive in Britain.

The 5th highest in the UK, the waterfall is produced by the Tail Burn flowing from Loch Skeen cascading dramatically down into the Moffat Water in the lower valley below.
