Sophomore Edition: Which Barnard dorm should you live in?

Unlike at Columbia, sophomore Barnardigans actually have a good shot at a single. Where though?

Your lottery number is:

The ideal dorm is one that is:

How important to you is the dorm’s distance from campus?

No Barnard dorms is really ~wild~, but we can ask this: Will having constant construction background noise be a major issue?

The most important thing I’m looking for in a dorm is:

Elliott

Elliott

Fondly known as “Helliott,” Elliott might get an unjustifiably bad rep. It’s close to campus without being in the Quad, you aren’t forced to get a meal plan, and there are plenty of singles. On the downside, it’s pretty cramped, and you will have to share a kitchen and bathroom. However, it’s a good option for anyone hoping to live in a single (especially as a sophomore or junior).

Hewitt

Hewitt

Hewitt is close to all your classes, and your chances of getting a single are super high, even as a sophomore. However, there are the unavoidable things you have to take into consideration: 1. Do you want to live in the Quad again? 2. Is the Upperclass Meal Plan right for you?

Plimpton

Plimpton

Plimpton is a good option for sophomore groups who want to live in a suite with AC (swoon). Most suites are singles with one or two doubles, and you’ll have your own kitchen and bathroom. On the downside, you’ll have a five-block uphill climb to campus, and many Plimptoners have complained of maintenance issues in the past.

110

110

You’ll actually be living with ~real~ people in 110, as this building houses both students and non-students. There will likely be someone from each class living on your floor, but the singles in suites generally go to upperclassmen. If you want an apartment feel with your own kitchen and bathroom (especially as an underclassman), 110 might be a good choice for you. It’s just a bit far.

616

616

616 will largely still be available for those choosing on junior selection day. Depending on what you’ve decided in your group, you can either get a single or double in a suite. It’s close to campus, and there are a couple of amenities that no other dorm in the 600s has, such as a piano and a TV lounge.
