Back to School: When the First Day of Studies Starts in Different Countries

According to the presidential decree of August 2004, Knowledge Day in Azerbaijan is celebrated on September 15.

American kids go back to school in August-September. The exact dates of the first and last days of school are determined by the gov’ts of each state.

For Japanese pupils, April 1 is the first day of the new school year. It coincides with the start of the new fiscal year.

South African schools open their doors in the middle of January. Interestingly, kids start to attend schools from four years old.

In this African country, the first day of studies kicks off on September 11. Ethiopians celebrate their national New Year on this date, too.

Like other former Soviet republics, Ukraine marks Knowledge Day on September 1. Every school was recently allowed to determine own celebrations.

Argentina doesn’t celebrate Knowledge Day. Like in many Latin countries, the school year starts with the beginning of autumn in February or March.

Each province chooses when school begins, however, most Spanish kids start in the middle of September.

In this country, schools start on March 20. It coincides with spring equinox – the date when night and day are nearly the same length.

Norwegian schoolchildren start to attend their classes in August, as well as children from Finland and Denmark.
