Unsure of what to do this Freshers' Week? Take our short quiz to find out which of Exeter's late night music venues best suits your personality, and thank us later.
We'll start simply. What genre of music do you enjoy the most live?
You're going to a gig this evening, and are desperate to get your gig attire right. What are you wearing?
You leave for the gig in a rush, but need to take a hat. You pick up the one you left on your staircase when you got in last night. What is it?
You arrive inside the venue and the music starts, but where do you stand?
You're starting to feel it. You don't know what it is but you want to express it somehow. Which dance move do you need to bust out?
That tired you out and you need refreshment. What is your drink of choice?
You get home and you want to relive your evening. How would you usually listen to music?
Now all that weak storyline is over, what kind of music will you go and see in future?
Cavern
Cavern
The Cavern is the venue for you. You're not gonna follow the trends, unless the trend is working out the trends of the future. This underground gem is Exeter's discovery gold mine. The kind of place you could have seen everything from Muse and Biffy Clyro to Coldplay and La Roux for roughly £8 before any were big. Now renowned for punk heritage, house and indie club nights, the local and innovative focus of the Cavern makes it a winner in all of Exeter's circles.
Phoenix
Phoenix
You should be going to the Phoenix. This is Exeter's biggest multi-arts platform, with several venues doubling up for music, cinema and exhibition. In the last few years it's been home to indie giants Everything Everything, King Charles and Wild Beasts. It dual hosts some of Exeter's biggest house and DJ nights, revelling in established and up-coming local talent. In the middle of expansions as well, bigger names are expected soon in this cultural hub, and we're sure they'll deliver.
The Old Firehouse
The Old Firehouse
You'll find few people in the city and neighbouring towns who don't cite the Old Firehouse as one of their favourite places in Exeter, and maybe the world. But it's not just every cider under the sun and the best pizza you'll taste, it's much more. It's a passionate ground for local music of all genres from jazz and reggae to orchestras, folk and rock bands. It's the resident host of ExTunes and slowly making its name as one of the most enjoyable music hangouts in the city. We'll be seeing you there.
The Lemon Grove
The Lemon Grove
The Lemmy. You got the Lemon. It hosts Exeter's biggest and most intentionally ironic club night every Saturday, and every Sunday, thousands wish they'd never been born. Tragedy aside, it actually doubles up as a pretty nice music space, hosting last year's Campus Bands Battle of the Bands, alongside some big names from Frank Turner to Years & Years. And the customary stop from The Wurzels. For all its internal mockery, you are like the Lemmy, and there's a lot more to you than people think.
Great Hall
Great Hall
You got Exeter's Great Hall. You're pretty quiet, and nothing much happens around you. But when it does, it's usually pretty big and pretty exciting. Like a spontaneous gig by Muse, or a visit from Bob Geldof and his merry rats. You're the home of established music and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. You may be inconsistent, but when you're good, you're good.
