The Spiritual Guru
The Spiritual Guru
No selfie-stick or gigantic map here. The modern hippy with their flowing clothes (which probably haven't been washed in the last week or two) can be found going on at everyone in the hostel about the benefits of minimalism and how at one with the universe they are . Easily located amongst the spiritual retreats of India or Asia practicing their yoga and relaxation techniques.
The Gap Year-er
The Gap Year-er
This lot are either about to start uni or have just graduated, and often stumble around the usual backpacker trail with a RTW ticket and Lonely Planet guide book in hand. Easily identified by their oversized backpacks and usually found in backpacker hot spots such as the Khao San Road.
The Party Animal
The Party Animal
These guys came travelling for one reason and one reason only; a deep and meaningful, cultural experience…. By that I mean, the Full Moon Party (Or indeed anywhere serving alcohol in a bucket). Follow the noise and it’s almost guaranteed you will find them. If you’re struggling, apply a little strategy and instead search for the Swedish girls. They’ll be near by, hoping they can pick them up. They can’t.
The Flashpacker
The Flashpacker
No dorm rooms or local busses here! They've rented their house out and it's funding a lifestyle of boutique hotels, private guides and cocktails. We're only jealous.
The Digital Nomad
The Digital Nomad
With Wi-Fi easier to find than an STI on the Khao San Road, it’s now possible to work for three hours, remotely earning American wages, in order to fund a week’s worth of diving, rafting and partying in Asia. Spend more than 10 minutes talking to a ‘travelling freelance web-designer’ about their job and you’ll be googling ‘coding for dummies’ in no time. Find them in the high-speed internet café, looking smug.
The Volunteer
The Volunteer
This group of travellers are here to do some good. Well, they have good intentions at-least as they search the world looking to cuddle a baby member of an endangered species and teach underprivileged kids how to speak English.
The Tourist
The Tourist
This group of backpackers can be found emerging from their air-conditioned all inclusive resorts in search of real travel and adventure - if only for the day. They can be easily identified by their use of travellers cheques and bum bags and can usually be found exiting McDonalds or KFC, which provides a sense of comfort and normality in this scary world beyond the tour bus window.
The Work-To-Travel-er
The Work-To-Travel-er
This group are probably on another career break, and have a bit more money to spend than your average backpacker. Frequenting boutique hotels and opting for private transport where possible. Easily identified via the latest smartphones and often found splashing the cash on awesome adventure experiences the rest of us wish we could afford!
