January 1966

Truman Capote publishes "In Cold Blood", considered by many to be the first true crime book, detailing the 1959 quadruple murder of a Kansas family.

November 1974

"Helter Skelter", a true crime book about the Manson family murders, is penned by Vincent Bugliosi, prosecuting attorney in the Manson trial. It shifts a few copies – seven million, to be exact – making it the bestselling book of its genre.

March 1989

Randall Dale Adams is exonerated from his false murder conviction following a documentary on his case, "The Thin Blue Line", showing the impact the genre could have.

June 1996

"Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills" becomes one of the first of the genre to feel fully investigative, with a knife used in the killings even given to filmmakers.

June 2004

The first episode of "The First 48", titled "Gangs of Little Havana/Execution in Coconut Grove" airs in the US.

November 2014

"Serial", investigating Adnan Syed’s guilt over the murder of his girlfriend, becomes the first podcast to reach five million downloads.

Channel 4 grips, twists and turns us with "The Murder Detectives", investigating the stabbing of a 19-year-old in Bristol. The three-part documentary goes on to win a BAFTA.

Netflix’s makes its first major foray into true crime with the premiere of "Making A Murderer", which becomes the TV event of the year.

The BBC Two premiere of "American Crime Story: The People vs OJ Simpson", which manages to be truly gripping even though everyone knows the ending.
