Overalls are a fashion item of practicality and comfort. You usually wear them to get things done, in context of hard labor.
So when buying overalls, there are some criteria to keep in mind.
We’ll mention those below. Treat the following as a set of rules for your next shopping trip!
#1 – Loose Fit.
An overall isn’t like a shirt.
When buying a shirt, it has to fit nicely. It can’t be too tall, crossing your zipper line. Nor can it be too short, making you look foolish.
But shirts are what you wear to look neat. With overalls, neatness isn’t a priority.
In fact, neatness is the total opposite of why you wear overalls.
You wear overalls to do messy duty. And to look neat in them is an odd statement to make.
Define Loose Fit?
Overalls shouldn’t be too tight on your legs. Also, don’t expect their straps to hug your body tightly.
You want something that’s not too lose though. Excess looseness is uncomfortable. And it’ll get in the way of what you’re trying to do.
Pick overalls that are 1-2 sizes higher than tight jeans you’d normally wear.
#2 – Go for a Denim.
Denim is a tough fabric. It’s used for jeans to last a long-time. And you’ll need them on your overalls too.
Overalls are meant to withstand abuse. They’re meant to withstand wear and tear from heavy outdoors activities.
And they should look good with wear and tear too.
This is why denim fits best. Worn out denim jeans are an often sought fashion item. And bringing that principle into overalls seems like a good idea.
#3 – Shoulder Straps (Preferable).
Overalls come either with neck straps or shoulder straps.
A neck strap ties the overall from the waist, and around the back of your neck. We don’t recommend those, as they can cause posture problems.
Especially with denim overalls, which are heavy in weight.
Go for shoulder straps. They balance well the overalls on your body. And you don’t feel constantly pulled down by the strap.
Also…
Shoulder straps are usually elastic. But some overall straps are not.
If you’re getting non-elastic (usually) leather straps, make sure they’re adjustable. The last thing you need is a strap that slides off your shoulder!
