Grimmie was discovered by Selena Gomez' stepfather, Brian Teefey, who later became Grimmie's manager. Teefay also managed Gomez before she fired him and her mother in 2014. Grimmie sang backup vocals for Selena Gomez & the Scene and toured with them on the We Own The Night Tour in 2011. Grimmie told Seventeen in 2011 that she was star-struck by meeting Gomez, but the two instantly became friends. "When you think Selena Gomez, you think, celebrity. But really, she does so many things for me. She's very caring. Before she goes on stage she's a goofy girl. She's fun-loving and totally lovable, which I say in the most honest way. She's not even a celebrity to me; she's just a really cool person," she said.

Grimmie joined the singing competition in 2014 and performed Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" for her blind audition. All four of the coaches --- Adam Levine, Usher, Shakira, and Blake Shelton --- turned their chairs around for her, but she elected to join Levine's team. She performed "Wrecking Ball" again for the live finale as well as Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know" along with Levine and Elvis Presley's "Can't Help Falling in Love." She placed behind eventual winner Josh Kaufman and runner-up Jake Worthington. She referred to her coach, Levine, as one of her biggest inspirations in a 2014 interview with Hallels. "I just remember being on the show with him. He was invested, you could tell it wasn't even about the show at a certain point anymore. I will forever carry that with me. He is honestly one of the biggest inspirations ever now."

Grimmie signed with Island Records and joined "The Voice" Summer Tour in 2014 before beginning work on her first album for the label. Her hit single, "Must Be Love," was released during July of 2014, but she announced that she was dropped from the label in March of 2015. She told the Daily Record that the split was due to the demand with multiple other bigger stars out there. “Island signed then called it quits on me because there were so many big artists right now, they didn’t want to shelf me so they let me go do my thing," she said.
